Plan for Košice
The Plan for Košice was initiated in response to the need to update the city’s outdated master plan and to open up the planning process to the broader public in the context of rapidly changing social and spatial conditions. Spolka joined the process in 2018 — initially on a voluntary basis, later as expert consultants for participation and communication. Over time, we became part of a long-term and comprehensive process that connected the technical preparation of the master plan with active engagement of residents.
We contributed to the design and implementation of the overall participation and communication strategy. Our role was to translate the professional content of the master plan into a clear, accessible, and visually understandable format, while creating diverse opportunities for dialogue.
We developed the project’s visual identity and communication materials, produced videos, promotional outputs, citylight campaigns, leaflets, and content for public spaces as well as digital channels. We facilitated discussion events, roundtables, and thematic meetings. The project also included two exhibitions — one in the public space on Hlavná Street in Košice and another in the lobby of Košice City Hall.
The process concluded with the preparation of an extensive publication and a final public event that symbolically celebrated the successful adoption of the new master plan.
To date, the Plan for Košice remains Spolka’s largest and longest-running project. The new master plan was officially approved and has come into effect, providing the city with a modern and accessible framework for its future development.
Project outcomes:
- The largest public engagement in spatial planning in Slovakia
- More than 1,700 public comments, approximately two-thirds of which were incorporated
- Over 100 public events - discussions, meetings, exhibitions, and city walks
- Thousands of people reached through public space, public transport, cinemas, and digital channels
- Two exhibitions: one in the public space on Hlavná Street in Košice and another in the lobby of Košice City Hall
- A comprehensive publication documenting the entire process of developing the new master plan and sharing the lessons learned
- The first fully digitalised master plan in Slovakia
